Travel Essentials for Bhutan
Prepare for an unforgettable journey to the Land of the Thunder Dragon. These practical tips on packing, weather, customs, and connectivity will help you travel comfortably and confidently.
Seasonal Clothing Guide
Bhutan’s climate varies greatly by season and altitude. Here’s what to pack:
- Spring (March–May) & Autumn (September–November)
Best times to visit. Pack comfortable light layers, a fleece or warm jacket for cooler evenings, and a light rain jacket. - Winter (December–February)
Cold, especially in higher elevations. Bring thermals, warm fleece, gloves, scarf, hat, and a heavy down jacket. - Summer/Monsoon (June–August)
Warm and wet. Pack lightweight breathable clothing, a waterproof rain jacket, quick-dry pants, sturdy waterproof shoes, umbrella, and insect repellent.
Dress Code for Monasteries & Dzongs
Bhutanese sacred sites require respectful attire and behaviour:
- Modest clothing: long pants or skirts and shirts with sleeves (no shorts, sleeveless tops, or revealing clothes)
- Remove hats and sunglasses before entering
- Take off shoes before entering temple buildings
- Photography is generally prohibited inside sacred areas—always ask permission
Essentials for Treks & High-Altitude Travel
Many itineraries include hikes or visits to high passes:
- Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots with good ankle support
- Trekking poles, day backpack, and reusable water bottle
- High SPF sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat
- Personal medications and basic first-aid kit
- Consider altitude sickness prevention (consult your doctor about Diamox or similar)
Money & Connectivity
- Currency: Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN). Indian Rupees (INR) are widely accepted except ₹2,000 notes.
- ATMs: Available in major towns (Thimphu, Paro, Punakha), but foreign cards may not always work—carry sufficient USD or INR cash as backup.
- SIM Cards: Local SIMs from B-Mobile or TashiCell are easily available (bring passport copy). Good coverage in towns; limited in remote areas.
- Wi-Fi: Free in most hotels and cafes in urban areas, though speeds can be slow in rural locations.
