This Bhutan: Five Valleys journey takes you through Bhutan’s most visited regions—Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Phobjikha, and Bumthang—offering a clear and well-rounded introduction to the country. Each valley has its own character, from cultural landmarks and monasteries to open landscapes and traditional villages, creating a balanced mix of experiences.
The itinerary is well-paced, giving you time to explore key sites while also experiencing everyday life and local culture. Bumthang, regarded as the spiritual heart of Bhutan, offers a quieter and more grounded setting that adds depth to the journey. Tour Leader – Local Experts
Younten Jamtsho has been guiding since 2004, with over two decades of experience leading cultural and trekking journeys across Bhutan. He has also co-led expeditions with international leaders, combining Bhutanese traditions with broader travel perspectives. He is known for his calm approach and deep local knowledge, creating journeys that are meaningful and well-paced.
Younten is certified by Bhutan’s Department of Tourism in cultural and trekking guiding, with additional training in tour leadership and wilderness emergency response. He has successfully completed the Snowman Trek 11 times, one of Bhutan’s most demanding 25-day high-altitude treks.
Beyond guiding, Younten is passionate about Bhutan’s national sport, archery. He represented Bhutan in compound archery at the 2023 Asian Games.



Itinerary
Day 1
Thimphu
Explore Bhutan’s capital and its key urban attractions, with time to visit local markets, museums, and temples—offering a clear insight into daily life and culture.

Day 2
Thimphu
Begin the day with a hike to Cheri Goemba, with a stop at Pangri Zampa, a historic monastery now used as an astrology school. In the evening, take a relaxed walk near the Takin Sanctuary for views across the valley.

Day 3
Thimphu/Punakha
Travel to Punakha, stopping at scenic Dochu La pass with its stunning Himalayan views. Enjoy a traditional farmhouse lunch, then visit the revered Chimi Lhakhang Temple, a sacred site where pilgrims come to pray for blessings of fertility and happiness.

Day 4
Punakha
Enjoy a full day of exploration in Punakha on western discovery tour, the old capital of Bhutan. Hike through a trail that leads through fields and rice paddies to the extraordinary Khamsum Chorten. In the afternoon, explore Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s largest fortresses, Visit its halls, courtyards and cantilevered bridge, then stroll to another marvel – the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan. Punakha’s low elevation means that temperatures tend to be warmer than in nearby towns and districts.

Day 5
Punakha/Gangtey
Journey to the Gangtey Valley, also known as Phobjikha Valley, the winter home of the rare black-necked cranes. Along the way, stop to admire the Wangdue Phodrang Dzong and Wangdue town.

Day 6
Gangtey
Explore the stunning 17th-century Gangtey Goempa monastery. Walk through Phobjikha Valley, known as Khewa Valley for its potatoes. Learn about Phobjika Valley’s nature reserve, dedicated to preserving endangered, Black-necked cranes. With its pristine landscapes, Phobjikha is Bhutan’s top spot for outdoor adventures.

Day 7
Gangtey to Bumthang
Travel towards Bumthang with a stop at Chendebji Chorten. Continue to Trongsa, home to the country’s largest dzong and the royal family’s ancestral seat. Cross Yotong La Pass into Chhume Valley, known for its traditional yathra weaving, before arriving in Bumthang. Visit Wangdichhoeling Palace, the former residence of Bhutan’s second King.

Bumthang
Explore Jakar Valley’s key sacred sites before continuing to the quieter Tang Valley, known for its traditional farmhouses and forested landscape. Visit Membartsho (Burning Lake), a site of deep religious significance linked to Pema Lingpa.

Day 9
Bumthang to Paro
Fly from Bumthang to Paro on a 45-minute scenic flight. After arrival, visit the National Museum and Paro Dzong. Continue to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, and take a walk through Paro town, with time to explore local shops and restaurants.
