Overview
Held every autumn in the heart of Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu Tshechu is one of the country’s grandest and most vibrant celebrations. During this sacred festival, locals gather in their finest traditional dress to witness colourful masked dances, ancient rituals, and cultural performances that have been passed down for generations.
You’ll experience Bhutan exactly as locals do during tshechu season—immersed in atmosphere, tradition, and community spirit. Alongside the festival, you’ll explore Thimphu’s cultural icons and bustling markets before journeying beyond the city to discover the hidden valleys, monasteries, and peaceful landscapes that surround the region.
Visitors can comfortably spend half a day or more enjoying the Tshechu. During festival time, local markets fill with temporary stalls and pop-up shops selling traditional food, handicrafts, and souvenirs, adding to the sense of celebration across the town.
While Thimphu Tshechu is the most well-known, Tshechus are held throughout Bhutan in other districts as well as in smaller villages and communities. Most Tshechus last three days and carry deep religious and spiritual significance, honouring Guru Rinpoche and offering blessings believed to bring good fortune.
Thimphu Tshechu Festival Date: 21 – 23 September 2026
